In the wintertime, there are a number of illness that spread around. Getting sick is much more common in the winter. While many people choose to stay inside, we are in much closer contact. This means that germs can spread amongst people much more quickly.
If you start feeling ill in the coming months, you’re not alone. Here are some of the most common winter illnesses that are circulating.
Common cold
Colds can come and go year-round, but are especially common in the wintertime. Colds are viral infections, often distinguished by a runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, sore throat, and.or headache. Fevers are also common, but are usually low-grade. Colds are extremely contagious, but are easily treatable with over-the-counter medicines, a bowl of soup, and cup of hot tea.
Influenza
The flu is one of winter’s worst illnesses. It hits quickly with cold-like symptoms and a high fever. Muscle aches and pains are also common. The best way to prevent the flu is by seeing a doctor to get a flu shot before flu season begins. It’s not too late though! If you haven’t gotten one yet, there’s no time to waste.
If you do get the flu, go to your primary doctor’s office. You will likely be prescribed an antiviral medication. Don’t forge to drink plenty of liquids and get some rest.
Pneumonia
Strep Throat
Strep is most common in school children, but can be contracted at any age. Sore throats, headaches, and stomachaches are common signs of strep. High fever and nausea can also occur. It can be easily treated with antibiotics, but recurring cases will often require urgent care. Many people who have recurring cases of strep throat end up having their tonsils removed.
If you become sick, the most important thing to do is see a doctor and stay home. You do not want to spread contagious diseases among your classmates or coworkers. Be sure to take your recommended medication and get plenty of rest. If your child becomes sick, do not send him or her to school or daycare to prevent the disease from spreading.
