There has been an ongoing discussion about the need for more students to enroll in and graduate from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. According to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, even when students initially major in engineering and science, 40% change their major to a course of study outside these fields.
A Brief Overview of STEM Major Graduates
Recent data indicates that the United States has a low ranking when compared with other advanced countries in this regard. When comparing the number of science major graduates with 40 of the most advanced countries, the United States has a ranking of 38.
Korea, for example, has graduated a larger percentage of STEM students than colleges and universities within the United States. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard report revealed the following percentage of STEM graduates for these two countries:
- Korea: 38%
- The United States: 16%
Economic Growth Through Science and Engineering
Economic growth has been made possible through the efforts of workers within the fields of science and engineering. Even though the U.S. Department of Labor released data that indicated only five percent of workers are employed within these fields, they are responsible for approximately 50% of the economic growth experienced within the country.
Health Education Products to Promote Learning
There are a variety of health education products available for schools, workshops, clinics and other types of medical facilities. In addition to posting diabetes education posters, such as a diabetic portion control plate, physicians may also want to post an exercise calorie chart in their waiting or examination rooms.
Health education products are also available in Spanish. When students and/or clients are in the process of learning to speak, read, and write in English, having a chart with all of the muscles in Spanish can be helpful. These charts are also excellent tools for visual learners, and approximately 65% of students learn more effectively with visual aids. When visual and other types of learners have images of muscles along with labeling the muscles in Spanish, this can assist them with reinforcing this knowledge.
Once you contact a health education products representative, you’ll be able to learn more about available charts and other learning tools. At this time, you can discuss your needs in greater detail and ask for recommendations. You may, for example, be interested in having a few interactive products, such as self-esteem bingo and fitness dice.
